When you change your address, please keep in mind that the address you use to interact with public entities and institutions also changes. Therefore, updating it is mandatory and this involves carrying out a series of procedures.
Registration or modification in the municipal register of inhabitants
Registering in the municipal register of inhabitants in the municipality where you habitually reside is a responsibility and a right. Doing so gives you the status of being a resident in the municipality.
- If you change your address within the same municipality, it is considered a modification to the municipal register of inhabitants.
- If you come from another municipality, it is considered a new registration in the municipal register of inhabitants.
To register, you must prove your identity (DNI, NIE, etc.) and your residence at the address you give (property deed, rental agreement, etc.). You can also register at a residence hall, boarding house, or hotel.
Most town councils make it possible to handle the procedure online. Check to see if your town council offers this service.
Taxes and fees
The tax domicile for natural persons corresponds to the address given for their habitual residence, which must coincide with the address given in the municipal register of inhabitants.
You must give notification of your new address to the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT).
If you pay taxes to other municipalities (for a flat you own, for an economic activity, etc.), you must give notification of your new address.
Automatic change of address
Once a change has been made to the municipal register of inhabitants, the town council automatically reports it to:
- The Spanish Social Security Institute.
- The Spanish Social Security Administration.
- The Directorate General of the Police (DGP).
However, we advise consulting the corresponding town council on a case-by-case basis because not all of them do so.
Official documents
You must update the address that appears on official documents (DNI, passport, driver's license, etc.), which must be handled in person at a police station.
If you do a renewal to modify data (change of address, name, etc.) for a valid ID, the procedure is free. An appointment must be made in advance.
Health centre
If you have changed your address, you must go to the Primary Care Centre (CAP) that corresponds to your address and show your municipal register of inhabitants certificate and choose your doctor based on the centre's hours. You can also call 061 Salut Respon.
Other entities and organisations
We advise modifying your address with all entities, associations, or organisations with which you have registered.
Remember to report this to all banks or credit unions where you have accounts open, various organisations (insurance, NGOs, etc.), newspaper and magazine subscriptions, home shopping, sports clubs and professional associations... and obviously to all your family and friends.
